Under the Skyway:  Chicago's East Side

Public Art (Page 4)

Literally under the Skyway, the East Side Memorial Park is a triangular section of meager grass, lots of gravel, and a few recently-planted evergreen shrubs.  Bounded by 100th Street, Ewing Avenue and Indianapolis Avenue, it would be easy to miss if not for the tank, with its turret pointing at traffic.  Less obvious are a mural on the south side of the railroad embankment on 100th Street and a sculpture in the middle of the park.  I'd seen the mural many times, but not until actually stopping at the park did I notice the sculpture, which seems especially appropriate in theme and material to its location.  As shown below, the mural is a bit rough around the edges, but seems to reveal the community's self-definition.
